PROFILE

A communications executive with a broad range of local and national experience in the creation, development and delivery of integrated public policy, communications, marketing and media initiatives. Career highlights include:

  • As chief lobbyist for the Times Mirror Company, presented at the White House an overview of wireless technology to President Clinton and Vice President Gore that was broadcast nationally on C-Span and CNN.

  •  Created messaging and media coverage for a national public health campaign on female bone health that included five-city media tour with celebrities Michael Tucker and Jill Eickenberry.

  •  Developed integrated communications campaign, including media and outreach in 28 cities, for HealthWeek, a national PBS program produced by Newsweek Productions.

  •  As VP Development for Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona, created and implemented the celebration event for the 70th anniversary that raised $74,000, nearly double the amount raised in previous years, and attracted nearly 250 attendees compared to the 95 who attended in 2003. Also, exceeded development goals by 27%; wrote two successful grants that brought in $40,000; and, was the primary author of an application that won PPSA a national award for a key educational program.

  • Created and implemented two women's health conferences for the Heinz Family Foundation, including identifying and securing such nationally known speakers as Dr. Carol Gilligan and Dr. Bernadine Healey. Topic of conferences focused on the impact of culture on female's physical and mental health, and on sexuality.

  •  Executive producer of a two-hour documentary, The Body Project, narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, which has been initially green-lighted by PBS.

  • Speaker and panelist at numerous women's health conferences on the effects of media on female health, well-being and sexuality.

  •  Broad-based writing skills including grants, annual reports, brochures, speeches, newsletters, magazine articles and Op Eds. Work has appeared on-line and in numerous publications, including Airport Magazine, DiscoveryHealth.com, the Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe and Atlanta Journal and Constitution.



PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Southern Arizona Leadership Council January 2005 – Present
Vice President


Public policy expert for the organization that represents the CEO’s of a wide range of companies based in Southern Arizona. Responsible for influencing and shaping policy at the state and local level, and for helping shape the long-term vision and goals of Southern Arizona in key areas including education, health care, transportation, economic development and governance.


Planned Parenthood of Southern AZ September 2003 – June 2004
Vice President, Development


Primary responsibility for all aspects of fundraising and friend-raising, including creation of events, strategic planning and oversight of all direct mail activities, creating and solidifying relationships with major donors, and oversight of planned giving programs. Special strengths include writing skills and an ease and comfort in developing and maintaining relationships with major donors and Board members. Worked closely with senior management in the strategic integration of development in all aspects of the operation. Assumed complete budgetary responsibility for all development activities and reported directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer.

National Osteoporosis Foundation
Director of Communications June 2001 - January 2003


Directed full range of communication functions for the Foundation including strategic integration of messaging, development of national campaigns for Osteoporosis Awareness Month, oversight of public relations functions and development of plans to transform NOF brand in the marketplace. Highlights included the creation and publication of an NOF magazine prototype, Bonus, elements of which included development of business plan, concept development, focus group testing and writing of content, and the creation and coordination of a national media tour featuring Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry.

J. Jackson & Associates December 1999- June 2001

Consulting services as media and marketing consultant. Projects included freelance writing of magazine articles, brochures and annual reports, executive production of short subject videos, and the creation and implementation of health conferences. Served as Contributing Health Editor for WomensNewsLink and as Editorial Director for the Pew Center for Civic Journalism. Created and developed two national health conferences in Boston funded by the Heinz Family Philanthropies.

Director, Media and Outreach May 1997 – November 1999
PBS’s HealthWeek


Oversight and direction of all communications and media for PBS’s HealthWeek from launch of the weekly health newsmagazine. Developed outreach for the program, including extensive fundraising efforts, coordinated with PBS stations nationwide. Conceived and produced five, one-minute “Women’s Health Tips,” anchored by Dr. Bernadine Healy and distributed for 1 1/2 years by National Public Radio. Executive produced four short-subject videos shown at the conferences on effects of media on female health and sexuality.

Times Mirror Company September 1989 - August 1996
Director, Washington Office

Headed the Washington, D.C. office of the Times Mirror Company representing companies owned by Times Mirror including the Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun and its magazine, book, cable and broadcast holdings. Directed four-person office; responsible for setting and meeting budget goals and objectives; reported directly to senior management. Met regularly with members of Congress and the Administration and made presentation at the White House to President Clinton and Vice President Gore on wireless technology. Co-chaired Times Mirror's Diversity Task Force. Consulted to the company from July 1984-Sept. 1989.

Executive Director

Directed complete range of association management duties including lobbying, writing and distributing monthly newsletter, planning and running quarterly meetings, budgetary oversight and membership development. Members represented the major daily newspapers and weekly national magazines.
